At Ankara Elementary High School, students are using sculpture as a hands-on, immersive learning experience that connects them to broader societal, cultural, and historical contexts.
Ms. Constance Mack, the school's dedicated art teacher, uses sculpture to help students relate artistic ideas and works to meaningful themes. She designs her lessons to ensure students not only create art but also understand its significance. In a recent project, students created sculptures reflecting their values about community, focusing on the theme of "The Family."
One student sculpted a plane and titled it "Plane Ride of Life," explaining that each family experiences ups and downs, similar to a plane encountering turbulence. Another student crafted a tree stump rather than a traditional family tree, symbolizing her 18 cousins through growth rings and representing her immediate family with surrounding mushrooms.
By incorporating these strategies, Ms. Mack ensures her students engage deeply with art standards while developing creativity and critical thinking skills. She assigns themes such as "Nature," "Emotions," and "Historical Events," encouraging students to explore and connect their artistic creations to broader ideas.
To further enhance the learning experience, Ms. Mack organizes exhibitions where students present and critique their sculptures. They explain their creative processes and receive feedback from peers and teachers. One student appreciated the project for highlighting the uniqueness of each family through different shapes, while another emphasized embracing imperfection over perfection.
